The United Press for Development Network (UPDN) has called on President John Dramani Mahama to suspend Mr. Sammy Gyemfi, a prominent National Democratic Congress (NDC) member and Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following a viral video that has sparked widespread public outcry. The footage shows Mr. Gyemfi handing over what is reportedly an undisclosed amount of US dollars to Evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.
In a statement released on Monday, 12th May 2025, the UPDN expressed its “utmost disappointment and concern” over the incident, arguing that an apology from Mr. Gyemfi alone is insufficient to address the serious ethical questions raised by the video.
The network emphasized that this act, which appears to breach the principles of transparency and accountability, could undermine the credibility of President Mahama’s administration, particularly in light of the recently launched Code of Conduct for Public Officials.
“An apology does not absolve the potential impropriety of the act, especially when it directly conflicts with the principles of transparency, integrity, and accountability that the current administration has committed to uphold,” the UPDN’s statement read.
While Mr. Gyemfi has publicly apologized, claiming the gesture was personal and not intended for public scrutiny, the UPDN insists this explanation is inadequate.
The organization highlighted that the Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, has already summoned Mr. Gyemfi for clarification. However, it stressed that further steps are necessary to preserve public trust and reinforce the government’s commitment to ethical leadership.
In its statement, the UPDN urged President Mahama to:
1. Immediately suspend Mr. Gyemfi from all official government and party-related duties pending a full and transparent investigation.
2. Commission an independent inquiry to investigate the source of the funds, the intent behind the public display, and any potential violations of state ethics or financial misconduct.
3. Reaffirm his administration’s commitment to ethical governance by ensuring that no individual, regardless of political status, is shielded from scrutiny.
“Ghanaians deserve leaders who lead by example,” the UPDN noted, emphasizing its role as a watchdog committed to demanding accountability and respect for public office.
