In a strong show of community support, the Manganese Ladies Association, backed by Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL), has distributed over 1,000 sanitary pads to schoolgirls in its host communities as part of the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebration.
The initiative, themed “Together for a Period Friendly World,” aimed to address period poverty and promote menstrual hygiene among girls in underserved areas such as Tarkwa Banso, Enyinasie, Akyim, Domeabra, Esuaso, and Bonsawire in the Western Region.
Speaking at the launch of the programme in Akyim, Mrs Cynthia Quaidoo, Secretary of the Manganese Ladies Association, explained that the annual outreach was not only about distributing pads but also about educating girls on menstrual health and hygiene. She stressed that menstruation should never be a reason for girls to miss school or feel ashamed.
“We want to create a safe and inclusive environment where girls can manage their periods with confidence and dignity,” she said.
The impact of the outreach was felt strongly by both school authorities and local leaders. Madam Stephanie Mbeah, Headmistress of Akyim Emmanuel Methodist School, noted that the event had helped demystify menstruation for many students and boosted their confidence.
Opanyin Kofi Amu, Ntotuohene of Akyim, commended the gesture, highlighting how financial constraints often prevent families from affording sanitary pads. “This support is timely and much-needed,” he said.
Several beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation, with one student remarking, “This has really changed things for me. Now I can focus on school without the fear of embarrassment.”
By targeting education and accessibility, the Manganese Ladies Association and GMCL continue to play a vital role in reducing stigma and ensuring period equity in their communities.
