An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 19-year-old Rashid Aziz, an unemployed youth, to 24 months imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy, unlawful entry, and stealing in connection with a dawn burglary in Madina on May 15, 2025.
Aziz admitted to breaking into the home of Fati Ahmed, a trader, and making away with valuables including an iPhone 11 Pro Max (GH¢5,500), a Samsung tablet (GH¢1,200), jewellery worth GH¢3,000, and GH¢3,000 in cash. His accomplice, 20-year-old Nelson Godwin Ezel, however, denied the charges and has been remanded into police custody to reappear in court on June 11, 2025.
Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, prosecuting, said the complainant discovered the theft at 4:50 a.m. and, with the help of her brother, used tracking technology to trace the stolen iPhone to a repair shop in Korle Bu. The repairer, upon questioning, identified a young man who had brought in the phone for unlocking.
The suspect, along with the device, was handed over to the police. During interrogation, he identified Aziz and Ezel as the individuals who gave him the phone. Although they initially evaded arrest, police later received information that both suspects had been apprehended in possession of the stolen items and were held at the James Town Police Station.
In their caution statements, Aziz and Ezel allegedly admitted their involvement, stating they broke into the house to find money for transportation back to Agbogbloshie.
Presiding judge Isaac Addo convicted Aziz on his own plea and sentenced him to two years in prison, while the case against Ezel proceeds.
