A 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) and his stepfather, Daniel Owusu Baafi, have been granted bail by the Mampongteng District Court following their arrest over unlawful possession of a firearm. The student and his stepfather were each released on bail of GHS 50,000 and GHS 30,000 respectively, with strict conditions imposed on their sureties.
The case came to light when the student was found in possession of a locally made pistol on school premises by an assistant headmaster on May 14. The student was immediately handed over to the police, leading to further investigations and the subsequent arrest of his stepfather, a pastor.
During court proceedings, the stepfather denied owning the weapon, explaining that it belonged to his late uncle and was stored in the uncle’s room, which the student later occupied. The police cautioned both suspects but released them on police enquiry bail prior to formal charges.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions on campus security and the measures needed to prevent illegal weapons from finding their way into educational institutions. The court has adjourned the matter until June 17 as the investigation continues.
