A wave of frustration has swept through Site Three in Tema, Greater Accra Region, as residents and shop owners protest a demolition exercise led by the Tema Development Company Limited (TDC).
The aggrieved community members say the operation, which they describe as abrupt and heavy-handed, has displaced livelihoods and destroyed years of hard-earned investment.
The demolition, backed by military personnel and a task force, targeted several structures on land TDC says is earmarked for the construction of new commercial stores. These will later be leased out, according to information gathered from the scene. However, residents insist the redevelopment plans were never properly communicated.
Emotional scenes unfolded as business owners confronted bulldozers and armed personnel, accusing them of using unnecessary force. Many said the demolitions came without sufficient notice or dialogue with those directly impacted.
“I woke up and everything was gone,” one shop owner told Accra 100.5 FM’s Rebecca Lartey. “We were never consulted. We only saw bulldozers and soldiers moving in.”
The Assemblyman for the Ashiboi Electoral Area, Mr. Godsway Dzene Franklin, has joined calls for a temporary halt to the exercise. He criticized TDC’s approach, urging the company to initiate a transparent and inclusive engagement process with the community.
“This is not just about land—it’s about people’s survival,” Mr. Franklin stated.
With growing tensions and calls for intervention, residents are appealing to government authorities to step in and mediate before further demolitions take place. Many fear the lack of communication and heavy security presence will only deepen mistrust between the community and TDC.
The incident has reignited debates over urban redevelopment and the balance between progress and people’s rights.
