Veteran Ghanaian rapper Okyeame Kwame has revealed that he faced strong resistance when he decided to publicly involve his family in his music career, a move he says has now inspired many other artistes to follow the same path.
Speaking in an interview on Angel FM in Kumasi, the award-winning musician said the idea was unpopular at the time because many people believed showing a stable family life could reduce his appeal to female fans.
“Before now, people did not want to involve their family in their music,” he explained. “When I suggested this, they told me that if I did that, women who listened to my music would stop.”
Despite the warnings, Okyeame Kwame said he remained committed to building a brand that reflected his personal values, marriage, and family life.
“But that did not deter me,” he stated. “I did it, and now I get phone calls from some of these artistes who want to involve their families in their music.”
According to the rapper, public figures have a responsibility to project growth, maturity, and stability because of the influence they have on society, especially young people.
His comments have reignited conversations about celebrity branding in Ghana’s entertainment industry and how perceptions around marriage and family among musicians have evolved over the years.
