Authorities in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa District of the Central Region are renewing calls for caution around water bodies following two separate drowning incidents linked to recent heavy rains.
In the latest incidents, a 45-year-old man who went missing in Morkwa three days ago was later found dead in the Pra River on Monday after an extensive search.
On the same day, search efforts were launched for Alfred Kumi, a Junior High School graduate from Gomoa Ohua in the Gomoa West District, who reportedly disappeared while bathing in the Osen River at Twifo Edugyaa. His body is yet to be recovered.
Alfred had been visiting his father in the area after completing his 2026 BECE examinations, with hopes of securing support to continue his education.
District NADMO Director, James Pra, confirmed the incidents and said investigations were ongoing in collaboration with the police while search operations continue for the missing student.
He expressed concern over unsafe activities along riverbanks, particularly illegal sand winning, which he warned is worsening erosion and creating dangerous conditions for residents.
“They are setting traps for people to die in rivers,” he cautioned, calling for stricter enforcement and community vigilance.
Mr. Pra also appealed to national and regional authorities to equip emergency teams with life jackets and other essential tools to improve rescue operations during water-related disasters.
The incidents have heightened concerns about river safety in flood-prone communities as the rainy season intensifies.
