In a bid to promote long-lasting peace and development across the Volta Region, the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) is set to introduce a Peace Award Scheme, aimed at encouraging peacebuilding efforts in the region.
The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Regional House of Chiefs and the Regional Peace Council, with an emphasis on creating structured guidelines to support peace-related actions.
Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, made this announcement during an award ceremony organized by the Regional Peace Council Secretariat on Thursday. Speaking at the event, Mr. Gunu reaffirmed the commitment of the VRCC to fostering peace, highlighting that peace is the critical foundation for sustainable development.
“Peace is not merely an aspiration but a necessity for progress,” he remarked. “Without peace, all dreams of development and advancement will remain unattainable.”
The scheme, which will honor outstanding contributions to peace, received support from a wide range of individuals and institutions. The recipients of the inaugural awards included notable figures and groups such as Mr. Clemence Gyato (Peace Ambassador), The Muslim Community, The Ecumenical Council, The Church of Pentecost, Reverend Nelson Agbove, Ho Bankoe Church of Pentecost, the Regional Police Command, and the 66th Artillery Regiment.
Mr. Gunu also emphasized the importance of the region’s diversity, stating that the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic groups, religions, and communities is paramount to the region’s growth. The peace award aims to not only recognize efforts made in resolving conflict but also to inspire further cooperation and harmony among the people of Volta.
He reiterated that peace is directly linked to attracting investment, ensuring social justice, and enhancing governance. The VRCC’s role, according to Mr. Gunu, is to ensure the effective coordination of policies and programs, always striving for transparency and accountability to achieve regional development.
Rev. Seth Mawutor, Chairman of the Regional Peace Council, lauded the initiative as a significant step in recognizing institutions and individuals who played pivotal roles in shaping the conduct of the 2024 general elections. He expressed particular appreciation for His Eminence Gyato for his tireless efforts in mobilizing resources for the event, calling for special acknowledgment of his leadership.
In closing, Mr. Gunu called on various stakeholders, including community organizations, traditional authorities, civil society, and media outlets, to continue to uphold the values of peace, dialogue, and respect. “Only in an environment of peace can we realize our shared vision of progress,” he concluded.
The Peace Award Scheme reflects the VRCC’s vision for the region—a place where unity, understanding, and collaborative efforts will lead to a prosperous and peaceful Volta.
