Authorities in the Volta Region are grappling with one of the deadliest road accidents of the year after a collision at Peki–Tsame near Peki Senior High School claimed 15 lives and left 25 others injured.
The crash, which occurred early Tuesday on the Peki–Asikuma Highway, involved a 33-seater Mercedes-Benz passenger bus (GR 3215-E) travelling from Battor in the North Tongu District to Kabiti in the Oti Region, and a Mercedes-Benz container truck (WR 1553-C) heading from Nkwanta to Accra.
Preliminary information indicates that about 40 passengers were on board the two vehicles at the time of the accident. Rescue teams from the Ghana National Fire Service managed to extricate 25 survivors from the wreckage, including two infants whose mothers were among the deceased.
The fatalities comprise nine males and six females, with bodies deposited at the Peki Government Hospital mortuary. Injured survivors are currently receiving treatment at the same facility, while critically injured patients are expected to be referred to the Ho Teaching Hospital for specialised care.
Volta Regional Minister James Gunu visited the injured at the Peki Government Hospital on Tuesday evening, where he met medical staff and assessed the condition of survivors.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, he extended condolences to bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery, describing the loss as devastating—particularly the deaths of the mothers of the two surviving infants.
Following his hospital visit, the Minister called on traditional authorities, including the Paramount Chief of the Peki Traditional Area, Torgbui Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII, to discuss growing concerns over frequent road crashes along the highway.
The meeting focused on urgent road safety interventions needed to reduce accidents on the corridor, which residents say has become increasingly dangerous.
Mr. Gunu stressed the need for collective responsibility among drivers, road users and authorities to improve safety on the Peki–Asikuma stretch.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
