A senior aide to former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says an alleged attempt by some prison inmates to poison the politician is under investigation by prison authorities.
Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah said Mr Wontumi informed him of the alleged incident when he appeared in court on Tuesday, October 27, as the former NPP regional chairman marked his 100th day in prison.
Speaking to Accra-based Citi FM, Dr Boakye-Danquah said he had contacted the prison commander, who assured him that investigations had been initiated to establish the facts surrounding the allegation.
“I have received indications that over the past week, some prison inmates attempted to poison him,” he said.
He added that the circumstances of the alleged incident remained unclear, stressing that investigators were working to determine whether the claim was true.
Dr Boakye-Danquah said the prison commander had promised to provide feedback on the matter after the ongoing investigations.
“He mentioned that to me today when he came to court, and I have spoken to the commander, and the commander said he has asked them to investigate the matter, so he will come back to me on that issue,” he stated.
Despite the allegation, the aide said Mr Wontumi was doing well and that no medical reports had been received to confirm any health complications linked to the alleged poisoning attempt.
“Chairman is okay. We haven’t received any medical reports from the doctors,” he said.
The allegation has yet to be independently established, and no further details have been provided about the suspected method of poisoning or the inmates allegedly involved.
Prison authorities are expected to provide further information after completing their investigations.
