New Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Reece James will continue as the club’s captain, backing the defender to lead the team into a new era under his management.
Alonso officially began his tenure at Stamford Bridge this week as the Blues commenced preparations for the new season, although the Spaniard is currently working with a reduced squad due to the ongoing World Cup commitments of several players.
James is among those still involved in the tournament and is set to face Chelsea teammate Enzo Fernandez in the World Cup semi-final clash between England and Argentina on Wednesday.
Despite not yet working with the full squad, Alonso has already made a key leadership decision by retaining James as captain when the right-back returns to club duty.
The former Spain international praised James’ versatility, technical ability and connection with the club, describing him as a player who embodies Chelsea’s identity.
“He can do everything,” Alonso said.
“He can attack from inside or outside. He can deliver, he’s good at set-pieces, he has blue DNA, which is very important, and we transmit that to the whole team and new players. He’s going to be the captain.”
The decision represents a strong show of faith in the 27-year-old defender, who has been regarded as one of Chelsea’s most important homegrown talents despite recent injury setbacks.
Alonso’s appointment has ushered in a new chapter at Chelsea, with the former midfielder expected to build a team based on technical quality, leadership and a strong connection between players and the club’s traditions.
With James set to continue wearing the armband, Alonso has identified a key figure he believes can help drive his vision both on and off the pitch.
