Mr. Solomon Gbenga George, widely known as King Solomon, has been elected Chairman of the Bolgatanga District Chapter of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), pledging to usher in a new era of advocacy, transparency, and inclusive leadership.
At the 7th Quadrennial and 54th District Delegates Conference held in Bolgatanga, King Solomon, who currently heads Yikene Basic School, won 77 out of 140 delegate votes to clinch the top spot, defeating two other contenders. His election marks a leadership transition following the tenure of Mr. Charles Atakibire Ateem, who served two full terms.
Formerly the GNAT District Trustee, King Solomon now assumes responsibility for a district that encompasses Bolgatanga Municipality, Bolgatanga East, Talensi, and Nabdam. Themed “The Ghana Education Service @50: Achievements, Teacher Motivation and the Way Forward,” this year’s conference emphasized reflection and future planning.
In his post-election remarks, King Solomon acknowledged the persistent challenges faced by teachers, including promotion delays, resource shortages, and inadequate support for professional development. However, he expressed optimism: “Together, we can advocate stronger and speak louder.”
He pledged to lead with integrity and openness, committing to an inclusive approach that places members’ welfare and progress at the forefront. “Our union will thrive on transparency, accountability, and collective action,” he assured.
Outgoing Chairman Mr. Ateem used the platform to highlight his administration’s achievements, including securing land for GNAT Bolgatanga, decentralizing operations, and offering logistical support for local events. He thanked members for their continued faith and collaboration.
Also addressing delegates was Professor David Millar, retired educationist and president of the Millar Institute, who urged teacher unions to invest in continuous learning and technology adoption—including AI—to transform classroom instruction and close the gap between knowledge and application.
The new leadership of GNAT Bolgatanga enters office with renewed momentum, tasked with delivering stronger representation and impactful reforms for teachers across the region.
