Residents of Salakope, Amutinu, and Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality have taken to the streets, blocking the crucial Keta-Aflao highway with tree stumps and rocks to press for immediate government action against ongoing tidal wave destruction.
The youth-led protest follows severe tidal surges that have washed away homes, disrupted livelihoods, and buried parts of the road under sand, cutting off vital access and crippling local commerce. Assembly Member Sylvanus Kumawu warned that without urgent construction of sea defense walls and comprehensive coastal protection measures, these communities face further devastation.
With alternative routes now congested and local businesses suffering, the protesters remain resolute, demanding financial relief, housing support, and swift government intervention to rebuild their lives before the sea claims more land.
The blockade highlights the escalating crisis along the Volta coast, underscoring the urgent need for a coordinated response to safeguard vulnerable communities and prevent a worsening humanitarian disaster.
