South African police are investigating a mass shooting in Cleveland, Johannesburg, that left at least 12 people dead and nine others injured in an informal settlement late Tuesday night.
Authorities have launched a large-scale manhunt following the attack, which they believe was carried out by a group of armed suspects who entered the community in a white Toyota Quantum.
According to police, more than 10 attackers were dropped off near a petrol station before splitting into groups and moving through different entry points into the settlement.
“The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and moved through the area, opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle,” police said.
Emergency services and police units were dispatched after reports of gunfire shortly before midnight. On arrival, officers found multiple victims with gunshot wounds across several points in the community.
Initial reports indicated that 11 people — eight men and three women — were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim later died in hospital, bringing the total fatalities to 12.
Nine injured survivors were transported to nearby medical facilities, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Investigators say the motive for the attack remains unclear, and no arrests have yet been made.
“The motive for the attack is currently unknown and forms part of the ongoing investigation,” police confirmed.
The incident adds to growing concerns about violent crime in South Africa, where shootings in informal settlements are frequently linked to gang activity, criminal disputes, and other local tensions.
Police have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators as investigations continue.
