An Accra High Court has sentenced a 30-year-old baker, Daniel Kwarteng, to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of defiling a 14-year-old girl with mental impairment.
The court, presided over by Ms. Susanna Nyakotey, delivered the sentence after trial, noting that Kwarteng’s persistent denial of responsibility until the conclusion of proceedings amounted to an aggravating factor in determining his punishment. The court also considered mitigating factors, including his status as a first-time offender and his relative youth.
Prosecutors, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Dora Amoh, told the court that the incident occurred on May 17, 2025, at Peace Village, Amasaman, where the complainant—the victim’s mother—lives with her children.
According to the prosecution, Kwarteng visited the house, gave GH¢20 to a younger sibling to fetch water and buy biscuits, and then took advantage of the situation to commit the offence while the complainant was away.
He was later found at the scene, leading to a report being made to the police. Medical examination at the Amasaman Government Hospital confirmed the assault.
Kwarteng was subsequently arrested, charged, and convicted after investigations.
Following the judgment, the convict reportedly reacted angrily in court, making threats against court officials and police personnel.
