$150m U.S. Support to Zipline Set to Transform Medical Logistics in Africa

A new U.S.–supported initiative is poised to reshape healthcare delivery and economic opportunities across Africa as Zipline International prepares for a major scale-up of its drone-powered logistics network in five countries.

The expansion, backed by up to $150 million from the U.S. Government, is expected to create as many as 1,000 new jobs, strengthen national health systems, and generate more than $1 billion in annual economic gains across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda.

Unlike traditional aid programs, the initiative places strong emphasis on local ownership, with partner governments set to assume full operational responsibility for their medical-delivery systems once the initial investment phase is complete.

During a digital press briefing on Tuesday, U.S. officials framed the partnership as part of a broader effort to modernize global health responses using American-made robotics while reducing long-term aid dependency.

Jeff Graham of the U.S. Department of State said the collaboration with Zipline—known for its autonomous, all-weather drones—represents a strategic shift toward cost-effective, nationwide supply-chain transformation, particularly for remote communities where medical access remains fragile.

Zipline’s Africa CEO, Caitlin Burton, highlighted that the company’s centralized, on-demand logistics system replaces slow and fragmented health-delivery infrastructure with a unified network capable of supplying blood, vaccines, HIV medication, maternal health products, and emergency treatments around the clock.

Rwanda is expected to double its daily delivery capacity, while new distribution centers will open across all participating countries, extending services to as many as 130 million people.

Burton said the model’s strength lies in enabling countries to use a single integrated system to tackle multiple health challenges—from maternal mortality and HIV transmission to severe childhood malnutrition—without relying on expensive, disease-specific interventions.

She emphasized that while the U.S. contribution provides crucial startup capital, long-term costs are predictable and significantly lower than maintaining fragmented health programs.

With proven success backed by organizations such as the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Zipline’s expansion is expected not only to save lives but also to support domestic manufacturing and stimulate economic growth across partner nations.

“This isn’t just about delivering products,” Burton said. “It’s about building resilient, nationwide health systems that ensure no patient is left behind—regardless of geography, cost, or stigma.”
