In response to recent intermittent power outages, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to rapidly deploy 200 new transformers across key urban centres. This strategic move aims to strengthen the country’s power distribution network and better meet the rising energy demands of both industrial and residential consumers.
Speaking at the 2025 West African Mining and Power Expo (WAMPEX) in Accra on May 28, Minister Jinapor emphasized that despite challenges inherited by the current administration, Ghana’s power generation remains stable, with surplus electricity even being exported to neighbouring countries.
The Minister highlighted that enhancing the transmission and distribution infrastructure is critical to translating stable generation into consistent power delivery for end users.
“To truly guarantee reliable electricity, we must focus not just on generating power but ensuring it reaches every consumer efficiently. The deployment of new transformers is a crucial step toward that goal,” Jinapor stated.
This directive signals the government’s proactive approach to resolving power supply hiccups and underscores its commitment to sustaining Ghana’s role as a regional energy hub.
