Ghanaian sprint sensation Abdul Rasheed Saminu has sprinted his way into the history books, clocking a jaw-dropping 9.86 seconds in the men’s 100m at the NCAA meet on Friday, May 30, 2025—a performance that not only broke the national record but also catapulted him to the top of the world rankings.
The 27-year-old athlete shattered the previous Ghanaian record of 9.90 seconds, held by Benjamin Azamati, and in doing so, became the fastest man in the world this year.
The achievement has sparked widespread celebration in Ghana’s sporting community, with Mr. Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Sports-Ghana (CSG), leading the chorus of praise.
“This remarkable feat confirms your hard work and dedication,” Mr. Akpokavie said in a congratulatory statement. “You have not only raised the bar for Ghanaian athletics but also inspired the next generation of athletes.”
Saminu’s record-breaking performance automatically qualifies him for the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, later this year. His rise to the top comes after a series of notable international appearances, including a gold medal in the African Championship relay in Cameroon and a strong showing at the Tokyo Olympics, where he reached the semi-finals.
The GOC and CGA have pledged their full support as Saminu prepares for the global stage. “We are proud of your feat, which has given Ghana global visibility through sports. Keep up the momentum and continue to make Ghana proud,” Akpokavie added.
With his new world-leading time, Abdul Rasheed Saminu is now not just a national hero, but a serious contender on the world athletics scene—fueling hopes of a podium finish for Ghana in Tokyo.
