The reported value of cocaine seized in Ghana since 2025 has triggered calls for greater accountability from the authorities, with a New Patriotic Party (NPP) deputy communications director questioning the country’s effectiveness in tackling narcotics trafficking.
Private legal practitioner and Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Kwesi Botchway Jnr., Esq., has described the reported GH¢210 trillion value of the seizures in old Ghanaian cedis as alarming and a major national security concern.
He argued that the scale of the figure raised serious questions about the extent of drug trafficking activities in the country and the effectiveness of measures being deployed to combat the trade.
In an attempt to illustrate the magnitude of the reported value, Mr Botchway said the amount could fill an entire stadium if converted into physical cash.
He further claimed that transporting the money in articulated trucks would require approximately two million vehicles.
Describing the situation as scandalous, he called on relevant state institutions to provide explanations about the seizures and the circumstances surrounding them.
“This is scandalous, deeply troubling, and raises serious questions about the state of our national security and the fight against narcotics trafficking,” he said.
“Ghanaians deserve answers!” he added.
His comments place renewed focus on Ghana’s efforts to curb narcotics trafficking and the need for transparency in reporting major drug interceptions.
However, the GH¢210 trillion figure and the comparisons used to illustrate its magnitude remain claims made by the NPP official.
