Price War Among OMCs Triggers Second Fuel Price Drop in a Week

A fierce price war among Ghana’s leading Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) has triggered another round of fuel price reductions at the pumps, marking the second drop in a single week for the June 2025 pricing window.

The unexpected cuts—driven more by competitive positioning than global market forces—are rapidly reshaping consumer expectations and stirring optimism about the potential of deregulated markets to deliver relief.

Star Oil Fires First Shot

Industry leader Star Oil fired the latest salvo in the ongoing battle for market share, slashing its petrol price from GH₵10.99 to GH₵10.80 per litre. Diesel prices also saw a sharp drop from GH₵12.77 to GH₵12.13 per litre as of June 19, 2025.

Hot on its heels, Allied Oil confirmed a further reduction effective June 20. After reducing prices earlier in the week, the company has now pegged petrol at GH₵10.75 per litre.

Zen Petroleum has matched Allied’s new rate, deepening the sense that competitive pricing—not government intervention—is finally working in consumers’ favour.

Mixed Trends and Market Caution

However, despite the aggressive petrol pricing, diesel prices have displayed slight volatility since June 16. The reasons behind this marginal uptick remain unclear, though analysts suggest it could be tied to logistical factors or supply chain dynamics unique to diesel distribution.

Policy in Action: Deregulation at Work

The ongoing fluctuations serve as a real-time test of Ghana’s petroleum price deregulation policy, introduced in 2015. By allowing market forces to dictate prices, the policy sought to incentivize efficiency and transparency in pricing. For now, it appears to be bearing fruit, with competition among OMCs directly benefitting consumers.

Uncertain July Outlook

But the reprieve may be short-lived. Insiders warn of a possible upward price adjustment from July 1, 2025, if the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate.

The war between Israel and Iran has already driven crude oil prices up by $10 per barrel—from $66 to $76—within weeks, putting pressure on downstream prices globally.

Cedi’s Role in Price Buffering

A bright spot for Ghana, however, is the recent appreciation of the Cedi, which has helped cushion local fuel prices despite the surge in global crude benchmarks. Industry watchers believe continued currency stability could offset anticipated hikes in global crude, blunting the impact of a potential 5% or more increase.

Conclusion

With more than six pump price reductions in recent months, this latest development underlines the complex interplay between international shocks, domestic policy, and market competition.

If the Cedi holds strong and OMCs maintain their competitive pricing posture, Ghanaians may enjoy some respite—at least in the short term.
