The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season kicked off with storylines that went beyond the scoreboards, as history was rewritten, debutants stood tall, and defending champions signaled their readiness for another title chase.
Kotoko Finally Break Berekum Curse
Asante Kotoko stole the headlines with a long-awaited victory at the Golden City Park, defeating Berekum Chelsea 1-0. For 15 years, the Porcupine Warriors had failed to win on that turf, but Albert Amoah’s decisive strike ended the hoodoo. More than three points, the win serves as a psychological boost ahead of their CAF Confederation Cup tie with Kwara United of Nigeria.
Hearts Frustrated by Brave Debutants
Accra Hearts of Oak, meanwhile, began the season underwhelmingly, sharing the spoils in a goalless draw with newly promoted Hohoe United. The debutants, who played most of the second half with 10 men, stood firm against the Phobians, earning admiration for their defensive grit and resilience. The result left many questioning Hearts’ sharpness in attack.
Gold Stars Start Title Defence on Fire
Reigning champions Bibiani Gold Stars showed no signs of slowing down, beating Bechem United 2-1 in front of their home crowd. Samuel Atta Kumi’s quickfire brace in the first half gave the champions breathing space, with Bechem’s Dalvin Yeboah only managing a consolation. Gold Stars look determined to stamp their authority once again.
Medeama and Nations Signal Intent
Two of the season’s expected high-flyers, Medeama SC and Nations FC, both impressed on opening day. Medeama claimed a commanding 2-0 away win over Young Apostles, with Paul Yeboah and Emmanuel Owusu finding the net. Nations FC, on the other hand, spoiled Swedru All Blacks’ much-anticipated return to the GPL after 16 years, coming from behind to win 2-1 at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.
Mixed Fortunes Elsewhere
Karela United earned a narrow 1-0 win over Aduana Stars, while Heart of Lions edged Dreams FC by the same scoreline. Vision FC shared the points in a goalless draw with FC Samartex, as did Basake Holy Stars and Eleven Wonders.
Week One Sets the Tone
With hoodoos broken, debutants earning respect, and champions flexing their muscles, the opening weekend of the GPL has set the stage for what promises to be one of the most competitive seasons in recent years.
