The Vice President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area, Buipewura Abdulai Jinapor II, has urged the Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, to leverage his influence in bringing an immediate ceasefire to the ongoing conflict in Bawku.
During a courtesy visit to the Nayiri’s palace in Nalerigu, Buipewura Jinapor II emphasized the need for stability to pave the way for peaceful mediation efforts led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene. The visit formed part of his nationwide ‘Thank You Tour’ to express appreciation to traditional leaders following his election as Vice President of the National House of Chiefs.
The Buipewura also extended his appeal to the Kusasis in Bawku, urging them to disarm and embrace peace, as the long-standing chieftaincy dispute has significantly hindered development in the area.
Highlighting the deep historical ties between the Gonja and Mamprusi people, Buipewura Jinapor II referenced the 16th-century ‘Nakpa Alliance’—a pact forged by Kumpatia of Gonja and Naa Gbewaa, founder of the Mamprusi Kingdom. He explained that this alliance was built on mutual defense, trade, and cultural cooperation, reinforcing the strong relationship between the two kingdoms.
He further underscored that President John Dramani Mahama’s ‘Reset Ghana’ Agenda, which prioritizes economic growth in Northern Ghana, requires collective support. In particular, he stressed the importance of agricultural development as a key pillar for regional transformation and national progress.
In response, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga assured the Buipewura of his commitment to working alongside the Asantehene to restore lasting peace in Bawku. He welcomed the call for both factions to lay down their arms and expressed his support for broader reconciliation and stability in the region.
