The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that Mr. Umar Sanda has automatically forfeited his membership of the party after declaring his intention to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.
In a letter dated February 17, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC stated that Mr. Sanda’s decision directly violates the party’s constitution and its collective resolve to back a duly elected candidate for the by-election scheduled for March 3, 2026.
According to the statement, by choosing to contest against the officially endorsed NDC candidate, Mr. Sanda has, in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, automatically ceased to be a member of the party with immediate effect.
“You have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” portions of the letter read.
The party further cautioned Mr. Sanda against using the NDC’s name, logo, colours, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property belonging to the party in his campaign activities or related political engagements.
The move signals the NDC’s firm stance on party discipline and unity as it gears up for the Ayawaso East by-election, with political parties intensifying efforts to secure victory in the constituency.
Observers say the development could significantly influence the dynamics of the March 3 poll.
