The Kadjebi District in the Oti Region came alive on Wednesday as public servants and residents donned traditional Fugu attire to mark National Fugu Day, highlighting Ghana’s cultural pride while supporting local textile businesses.

A Ghana News Agency (GNA) visit to the District Assembly observed staff elegantly dressed in vibrant Fugu, reflecting the rich heritage of Ghanaian weaving traditions. The celebration, now firmly established in the district, promotes national identity and encourages the younger generation to embrace indigenous culture.

Mr Innocent Komla Gavua, Kadjebi District Coordinating Director, emphasized that Fugu is more than a cloth—it is a symbol of Ghanaian heritage. “Wearing Fugu projects our culture and instills pride in our identity. It is an initiative that must be embraced wholeheartedly by all Ghanaians,” he said.

The event also had economic implications, according to Mr Gershon Amedo, the District Budget Analyst. He noted that the growing patronage of Fugu stimulated local trade, benefiting weavers and textile dealers and contributing to the local economy.

Staff members of the Assembly shared their excitement about participating, describing the event as a meaningful way to honor tradition while fostering workplace unity.

National Fugu Day, observed every Wednesday following a declaration by Madam Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, aims to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage and promote locally made textiles. The celebration in Kadjebi demonstrates a strong commitment to sustaining indigenous crafts and reinforcing national identity through fashion.
