Finance Minister Urges Parliament To Support 2025 Budget For Economic Growth

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has called on Members of Parliament to back the 2025 budget estimates, emphasizing that their approval is crucial for implementing key economic policies aimed at driving national growth and development.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Post-Budget Workshop in Parliament, Dr. Forson outlined the government’s major economic initiatives, including the Big Push investment policy, the Ghana Gold Board, and the Agriculture for Economic Transformation programme. These, he noted, are designed to promote sustainable economic expansion and job creation.

“We have outlined a number of revenue and expenditure measures in the 2025 budget to support the achievement of our fiscal objectives and targets. And we would like to call on this esteemed House, particularly my colleagues, the Members of Parliament, to support these measures and the passage of the various legislations that will operationalise them as soon as possible,” Dr. Forson stated.

As part of the government’s strategy, Dr. Forson highlighted three key policies aimed at boosting economic resilience:

  • The 24-hour economy policy, designed to stimulate inclusive growth and increase employment opportunities.
  • The GH¢10 billion Big Push initiative, a major investment drive set to commence this year to enhance infrastructure and economic productivity.
  • The Ghana Gold Board, aimed at strengthening the country’s foreign exchange inflows and building gold reserves to stabilize the economy.

Dr. Forson emphasized that these policies are part of a broader vision to position Ghana as a leading player in regional trade and investment, particularly under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

With the budget currently under review, expectations are high for bipartisan cooperation in Parliament to facilitate its passage. Dr. Forson’s appeal comes at a time when Ghana faces key fiscal challenges, including external debt obligations and inflationary pressures.

Stakeholders in the financial sector have called for swift legislative action to ensure the timely implementation of these policies, arguing that delays could slow economic recovery and investor confidence.

As Parliament deliberates on the budget, the Finance Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, urging lawmakers to focus on policies that will drive long-term economic stability and prosperity for all Ghanaians.
