Ghanaian authorities have successfully relocated former Vice-President and 2028 NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and his wife, Samira Bawumia, from Qatar to a secure location following escalating tensions in the Middle East, diplomatic sources have confirmed.
The operation, coordinated by Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the region under the directive of Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, ensured the swift and discreet relocation of the couple and their entourage. Embassy officials collaborated with host authorities to guarantee a smooth transition, though operational details remain classified for security reasons.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that efforts are ongoing to protect all Ghanaians in affected areas, with embassies maintaining round-the-clock monitoring and providing consular support where needed.
The evacuation comes amid the 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis, which erupted on February 28 after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, prompting retaliatory attacks and severe disruptions to regional airspace and maritime routes. The conflict has affected global crude oil flows and heightened geopolitical instability.
Ghana’s proactive measures, including the relocation of high-profile citizens and evacuation of diplomatic personnel from Tehran and other hotspots, reflect the government’s commitment to the safety of its nationals abroad amid one of the region’s most severe crises in years.
