Efua Ghartey, President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has called on women in the legal profession to take a leading role in advocating gender equality and justice for women and girls in Ghana.
In a statement issued in Accra to mark the 2026 celebration of International Women’s Day, Mrs Ghartey encouraged women lawyers to actively pursue legal and socio-cultural reforms that would promote equal opportunities for women.
The celebration was held on the theme “Give to Gain,” which Mrs Ghartey described as a call for society to support women and girls as they navigate persistent challenges of inequality and injustice in their pursuit of success.
She stressed that the legal profession must remain at the forefront of efforts to challenge discrimination, confront harmful stereotypes and address biases that continue to limit the progress of women.
Mrs Ghartey noted that empowering women and girls to participate fully in all sectors of society would not only help them achieve their individual goals but would also contribute significantly to national development and social progress.
“For centuries, women have selflessly nurtured families and supported the aspirations of others. When women are given the freedom, opportunities and resources to realise their potential, they become even more impactful in society,” she said.
Drawing inspiration from the biblical example in Exodus 15:20, Mrs Ghartey encouraged women to remain positive influencers and pace setters in their various professional and social roles.
She also extended her best wishes to women at the Bar and urged young girls who aspire to join the legal profession to remain focused and determined as they prepare to become the next generation of women lawyers in Ghana.
