Chelsea have secured the long-term services of captain Reece James, who has signed a new six-year contract keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
A youth product of the club, the 26-year-old made his first-team debut in September 2019 and has since become a key figure for the Blues. James’ previous contract, signed shortly after the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital takeover in 2022, was due to run until 2028. The new deal reportedly includes performance-linked incentives, reflecting both individual and team achievements, and sees him remain the club’s highest-paid player on £250,000 per week.
“I am over the moon to have extended my contract — Chelsea means so much to me. I have always said I want my peak years to be here,” James said.
The England international has been a stalwart for Chelsea this season, starting 19 of 26 Premier League matches and bringing his total appearances for the club to 225. Versatile on the pitch, James has excelled both as a full-back and in midfield, impressing fans and management alike with his resilience and leadership after overcoming a series of injuries, including a hamstring surgery in December 2023.
Since being named club captain three years ago, James has added silverware to his résumé, winning the 2021 Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, 2025 Conference League, and Club World Cup. He has also focused on reclaiming his place in the England squad for the 2026 World Cup, following missed tournaments due to injuries. James returned to international duty in 2025, playing in key qualification matches and contributing to England’s 2-0 win over Serbia at Wembley in November.
Chelsea’s rapid negotiations for the extension reflect the club’s confidence in James’ ability to lead the team through a new era, while his personal determination underscores his ambition to reach both domestic and international success during his prime years at Stamford Bridge.
