The Greater Accra Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress is urging the party’s leadership to reconsider the timing of its upcoming branch elections, citing concerns over reduced participation during major global and religious events.
Coordinator of the caucus, Ismail Ali Horoya, is appealing to the National Executive Committee to postpone the polls originally slated for May–June 2026.
According to him, the scheduling overlaps with the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Hajj pilgrimage—two major events that will draw significant attention and participation from party members, particularly within Zongo communities.
He explained that many grassroots supporters are expected to be engaged either in following the global football tournament or undertaking the religious obligation of Hajj, which could affect turnout and overall participation in the internal elections.
Mr Horoya warned that proceeding with the elections as planned could undermine inclusiveness and disenfranchise committed members, stressing that broad participation is key to maintaining unity within the party.
He emphasised that fairness and cohesion remain central to the identity of the NDC, adding that internal democratic processes must be structured in a way that allows all members to fully engage.
The caucus is therefore calling for the elections to be rescheduled to a more suitable period to ensure stronger engagement and a more credible electoral process, while reaffirming its continued commitment to the party’s values and leadership.
