Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has described Harvey Elliott’s loan spell at the club as “embarrassing for everyone involved,” after the midfielder’s lack of game time raised questions over the deal’s effectiveness.
Elliott, 23, has featured just 109 minutes in the Premier League this season for Villa, having joined on a season-long loan from Liverpool.
The deal reportedly included an obligation for Villa to sign him permanently for £35 million if he reached 10 league appearances. However, the midfielder has managed only four league appearances, keeping him well short of the trigger clause.
Villa had previously explored the possibility of ending the loan in January, but negotiations with Liverpool failed to produce an agreement.
Speaking on the situation, Emery expressed regret over how events unfolded, while suggesting responsibility was shared between both clubs.
“My apologies for Harvey Elliott are, every day, in my mind. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility,” he said.
He added that the circumstances behind Elliott’s limited involvement were difficult to fully explain, describing the season as “difficult” for all parties.
Elliott’s only Premier League start came in September against Fulham, a match in which he was substituted at half-time. He has not featured in the league since February.
The midfielder joined Villa with hopes of securing regular top-flight minutes and strengthening his case for international recognition ahead of major competitions. However, his progress has stalled despite a strong youth international record, including a standout Euro 2025 campaign with England Under-21s, where he was named player of the tournament.
Villa’s upcoming fixture against Liverpool adds further context to the situation, although Elliott will be ineligible to face his parent club under loan rules.
Meanwhile, speculation continues over his long-term future, with reports suggesting he is unlikely to remain at Liverpool under current manager Arne Slot. Several clubs in England and across Europe are said to be monitoring his situation ahead of future transfer windows.
