Edudzi Tameklo has defended discussions surrounding political arrests in Ghana, insisting that the circumstances behind each case must be carefully examined before conclusions are drawn.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints programme, the NPA Chief Executive stressed that context remains crucial when assessing police actions involving politicians, activists and public commentators.
“Context is key,” he repeatedly stated during the discussion.
According to Mr Tameklo, some public comments and political statements can go beyond ordinary criticism and potentially create tension or national security concerns.
He argued that critics often overlook the broader circumstances that inform certain law enforcement decisions.
The NPA CEO also dismissed claims that only opposition figures have faced arrests or detentions in recent years.
He pointed to incidents under the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo involving broadcaster Bobie Ansah, social media commentator Bongo Ideas and activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor as examples of previous controversial arrests.
“You cannot erase that history and behave as though this conversation started today,” he said.
Mr Tameklo further stated that Ghana’s democracy must strike a balance between freedom of expression and public responsibility.
“If we remove context from these discussions, we will keep repeating the same political cycle,” he warned.
His comments come amid continuing public debate over political arrests, free speech and the role of law enforcement in Ghana’s democratic space.
