Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has extended congratulations to Benin’s newly sworn-in President, Romuald Wadagni, following his official inauguration in Cotonou.
President Wadagni, a former Finance Minister, took the oath of office at the Congress Palace after winning the April 12 presidential election, marking the start of a seven-year mandate leading the West African nation.
The ceremony attracted more than 6,000 guests, including African heads of state institutions, members of the diplomatic corps, and former Presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi, underscoring the regional significance of the transition.
Before administering the oath, the President of the Constitutional Court, Dorothé Sossa, formally charged the new leader to uphold and defend the Constitution throughout his tenure.
Dr Forson attended the event in Cotonou and represented President John Dramani Mahama at the inauguration, joining other high-level dignitaries from across the continent.
Wadagni, who previously served as Finance Minister for a decade, is widely credited with playing a key role in shaping Benin’s economic management before his elevation to the presidency.
In a social media message, Dr Forson described the occasion as historic and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to represent Ghana at the ceremony, wishing the new President success in office.
The inauguration brought together a wide cross-section of regional and international leaders, highlighting strong diplomatic ties and cooperation across West Africa.
