South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for their opening fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that Bafana Bafana have a clear strategy to challenge Mexico in a highly anticipated Group A encounter.
South Africa will face the tournament co-hosts on Thursday, June 11, in the opening match of the global football showpiece, with Broos determined to guide his side to a positive start.
Speaking ahead of the clash, the veteran Belgian tactician revealed that his team has spent considerable time studying Mexico and preparing tactical approaches for both attacking and defensive phases of the game.
According to Broos, the focus of the team’s final training sessions will be on refining key details ahead of a match he expects to be highly competitive.
He acknowledged the quality of the Mexican side, describing them as a well-organised team with strong movement, unity and a clear ambition to make a deep run in the tournament.
Broos noted that Mexico’s style of play reflects a team determined to compete for the highest honours and warned that South Africa must perform at its best to secure a favourable result.
The encounter carries added significance as it revives memories of the 2010 FIFA World Cup opener, when South Africa and Mexico played out a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.
While that result earned South Africa a memorable point, the hosts eventually failed to progress beyond the group stage.
Sixteen years later, Broos and his squad will be hoping to write a different story by turning a strong opening performance into a successful World Cup campaign.
With confidence high within the South African camp, Bafana Bafana will be aiming to make an early statement on football’s biggest stage and boost their chances of advancing to the knockout rounds.
