Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has raised concerns that Ghana’s national team could struggle at the 2026 FIFA World Cup if head coach Carlos Queiroz adopts an overly defensive approach.
Queiroz, who previously served as an assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, took charge of the Black Stars in April following Otto Addo’s departure.
Speaking on ITV Sports, Keane praised the Portuguese coach’s tactical understanding but questioned whether his style could limit Ghana’s attacking potential on the world stage.
“One of Carlos’ biggest strengths is the defensive side of the game. Brilliant coach, huge question marks about him as a manager,” Keane said.
He added that while Queiroz is respected for his coaching ability, his cautious approach could pose risks for Ghana against strong opposition.
“I just hope they don’t become too defensive… that might backfire on him,” he warned.
Keane also reflected on his past working relationship with Queiroz at Manchester United, describing him as an effective coach despite differences in personality.
Ghana will compete in Group L at the tournament, where they are set to face Panama, England and Croatia in the group stage as they aim to progress beyond the opening round.
