England captain Harry Kane has surpassed Brazilian football icon Pelé on the FIFA World Cup scoring chart after netting twice in England’s 2-1 victory over Congo DR.
Kane’s brace took his World Cup goal tally to 13, moving him past Pelé’s record of 12 goals. The Brazilian legend achieved his total in 16 World Cup appearances and remains the only player to have won three World Cup titles, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962, and 1970.
England found themselves trailing after Congo DR took an early lead before Kane restored parity in the 75th minute. Moments later, he fired home a stunning strike to complete the comeback and secure all three points for the Three Lions.
The latest achievement comes just days after Kane overtook Gary Lineker to become England’s highest-scoring player in World Cup history during the victory over Panama.
The England skipper has now scored 20 goals in major international tournaments and remains his country’s all-time leading scorer with 84 goals in 117 appearances.
Kane, who claimed the Golden Boot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup with six goals, is now just one goal away from matching that tournament haul.
The 15th World Cup start against Congo DR also set another milestone for the Bayern Munich striker, making him the England men’s team’s most-capped outfield player in World Cup matches, while taking his combined club and country goal tally this season to an impressive 72.
