A Nigerian woman has publicly apologised to older single women she once criticised for not being married, saying life has taught her that marriage is far more complex than she previously believed.
In a video shared on social media, the woman admitted that as a younger person, she often questioned why women in their 30s and 40s had not settled down, believing marriage was something everyone should have achieved by that age.
Reflecting on her past attitude, she said she now understands the challenges many people face in finding a life partner after reaching a similar stage in life herself.
“I want to apologise to all my big sisters, all those people that I knew as big sisters when I was growing up,” she said.
She recalled asking older women, “You’re 30 and you’re not married, what are you doing with your life? You’re 40 and you’re not married, what are you doing with your life?”
The woman revealed that she is now around the same age as the women she once judged and is neither married nor in a relationship.
“I’m around your age now. Yes, me, I am not married. And now, I’m just getting to know why you’re not married,” she admitted.
Expressing regret over her past remarks, she acknowledged that she had unfairly marriage-shamed the women without understanding their circumstances.
“I am saying sorry. I used to marriage shame you back then,” she said.
She added that her personal experiences had changed her outlook and made her realise that getting married is not as easy as she once assumed.
“I never knew. I did not know that it’s hard to get married. I am sorry,” she concluded.
