Ghana’s women’s football will receive a major boost as the maiden edition of the Women Democracy Cup is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 31, at the McDan La Town Park in Accra.
The historic competition, organised as part of Parliament’s Democracy Cup Project, will feature a clash between two of the country’s leading women’s clubs, with Army Ladies and Police Ladies competing for the inaugural trophy.
The event, initiated by Parliament under the leadership of Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is aimed at celebrating women’s contribution to Ghana’s democratic journey while promoting the growth of women’s football.
Ahead of the main contest, Parliament Ladies and Judicial Service Ladies will play a curtain-raiser to set the stage for the historic encounter.
The Speaker of Parliament will host the event, with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang serving as the Special Guest of Honour.
Expected guests include women leaders in Parliament, representatives from the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Electoral Commission, members of the diplomatic corps and other stakeholders.
The Women Democracy Cup forms part of a broader Democracy Cup initiative, which features three major competitions — the Democracy Youth Cup, the Women Democracy Cup, and the flagship Democracy Cup between Ghana’s traditional football giants, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, scheduled for August 23 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
Organisers said the Women Democracy Cup would become an annual fixture, providing a dedicated platform for women’s clubs to display their talents, strengthen competitiveness and contribute to the continued development of female football in Ghana.
The initiative also seeks to highlight the role of women in Ghana’s democracy and encourage greater participation and visibility for women across different sectors of national life.
The maiden competition is expected to attract football fans, policymakers, women leaders and stakeholders interested in advancing both sports development and gender inclusion.
