Akufo-Addo: NPP Must Win 2028 ‘Come What May’

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work tirelessly to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections, stressing that the party must win “come what may.”

He made the call when NPP Director of Communications hopeful Dennis Miracles Aboagye paid a courtesy call on him in Accra on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, to formally inform him of his decision to contest the position in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.

Mr Aboagye used the meeting to assure the former President that, if elected, he would build a sophisticated communications machinery capable of effectively shaping the political narrative and strengthening the NPP’s position as an opposition party.

Responding, Mr Akufo-Addo described communications as one of the most critical areas of the NPP’s efforts to return to power and said the success of the party’s comeback would depend significantly on the work of its communications team.

“You are taking up one of the most challenging aspects of our fight back, the communications arena. To a large extent, whether we prevail or not will depend on the work that you are going to do,” he said.

He commended Mr Aboagye for taking up the challenge and urged him to prepare for the demanding task ahead.

“That challenge is made more so by the fact that in 2028, come what may, we have to win this election. The opportunity is 2028; let us grab it, and make sure that we bring NPP back into office,” Mr Akufo-Addo said.

The former President also called for unity within the party after the national executive elections, urging all factions to rally behind the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 presidential election.

“The elections breed competition. When the die is cast on October 1, and I am confident you will win, you have to bring everybody on board and unite all factions in this party behind our flagbearer to make sure he gets onto the seat in 2029,” he said.

Mr Akufo-Addo further expressed confidence in Mr Aboagye’s prospects, saying he expected to hear positive news after the election.

“I want to wish you the very best, and I am confident that on October 1, I will hear good news; I will be in Kumasi,” he added.

NPP National Executive Elections

The NPP is scheduled to elect its national executives on October 3, 2026, as part of preparations to rebuild the party and position it for the 2028 general elections.

The party’s National Officers Elections Committee (NOEC) has said a total of 50 nomination forms were purchased for the nine national officer positions being contested.

The nomination period officially closed on Saturday, August 22, with the NOEC describing the process as successful and peaceful.

Following the close of nominations, the committee extended the deadline for the filing of completed nomination forms by two days to Saturday, August 29, 2026, to give aspirants additional time to complete and submit their documents for verification.

Vetting of aspirants is scheduled to take place from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026.

The vetting schedule indicates that candidates for National Chairperson, General Secretary and National Treasurer will be vetted on Monday, August 31.

Candidates for National Vice Chairperson will be vetted on Tuesday, September 1, while those contesting the National Organiser and National Youth Organiser positions will be vetted on Wednesday, September 2.

The final day, Thursday, September 3, will be dedicated to vetting candidates for National Communications Director, National Nasara Organiser and National Women Organiser.

The results of the vetting are expected to be published on September 5, with appeals scheduled for September 6 and 7.

The NPP National Council and National Executive Committee are expected to meet on September 10, while the notice of poll will be issued on September 14.

The election itself will be held on October 3, 2026.

Chairperson Race

The candidates who have purchased nomination forms for the National Chairperson position include Paul Afoko, John Boadu, Boakye Agyarko, Sammy Crabbe and Bernard Antwi Boasiako.

National Vice Chairperson Race

The National Vice Chairperson position has attracted 10 aspirants: Henry Nana Boakye, Kojo Fosu Boadu, Mustapha Abdul-Hameed, Samuel Pyne, Richard Ahiagba, Abena Pokua Boaitey Amoah, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, Yaa Amponsah Frimpong, George Kwabena Abankwah Yeeboah and Horma Miezah.

The NOEC has reiterated its commitment to conducting the elections in a fair, transparent, orderly and credible manner while providing equal opportunities to all aspirants.

The outcome of the elections is expected to shape the NPP’s leadership and organisational strategy as the party seeks to rebuild its structures, consolidate unity and mount a strong challenge for power in the 2028 general elections.
