Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has charged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to work tirelessly to reclaim power in the 2028 general elections, stressing that the party must win “come what may.”
He made the call when NPP Director of Communications hopeful Dennis Miracles Aboagye paid a courtesy call on him in Accra on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, to formally inform him of his decision to contest the position in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.
Mr Aboagye used the meeting to assure the former President that, if elected, he would build a sophisticated communications machinery capable of effectively shaping the political narrative and strengthening the NPP’s position as an opposition party.
Responding, Mr Akufo-Addo described communications as one of the most critical areas of the NPP’s efforts to return to power and said the success of the party’s comeback would depend significantly on the work of its communications team.
“You are taking up one of the most challenging aspects of our fight back, the communications arena. To a large extent, whether we prevail or not will depend on the work that you are going to do,” he said.
He commended Mr Aboagye for taking up the challenge and urged him to prepare for the demanding task ahead.
“That challenge is made more so by the fact that in 2028, come what may, we have to win this election. The opportunity is 2028; let us grab it, and make sure that we bring NPP back into office,” Mr Akufo-Addo said.
The former President also called for unity within the party after the national executive elections, urging all factions to rally behind the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2028 presidential election.
“The elections breed competition. When the die is cast on October 1, and I am confident you will win, you have to bring everybody on board and unite all factions in this party behind our flagbearer to make sure he gets onto the seat in 2029,” he said.
Mr Akufo-Addo further expressed confidence in Mr Aboagye’s prospects, saying he expected to hear positive news after the election.
“I want to wish you the very best, and I am confident that on October 1, I will hear good news; I will be in Kumasi,” he added.
