Carlos Queiroz has been handed a fresh mandate to continue as head coach of the Black Stars as Ghana turns its attention to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on Wednesday night that it had reached an agreement with the Portuguese coach to extend his stay with the national team following the completion of his initial short-term contract.
The new arrangement follows discussions between the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and Queiroz, with the parties agreeing that the 73-year-old should oversee the next phase of the Black Stars’ programme.
“Queiroz’s previous mandate, which included leading Ghana at the just-concluded FIFA World Cup, concluded a few weeks ago. Following discussions with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, it was agreed that Carlos Queiroz would embark on a new coaching mandate, commencing with the upcoming international window,” the GFA said.
Queiroz was originally appointed in April on a four-month contract as a short-term replacement for Otto Addo, with responsibility for Ghana’s preparations for and participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under his leadership, Ghana advanced from Group L after beating Panama, drawing with England and losing to Croatia before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
With the World Cup campaign now over, the GFA has opted for continuity by retaining Queiroz as the team prepares for the next major assignment.
The Portuguese tactician brings considerable international experience to the position, having previously managed Portugal, Iran, South Africa and Colombia.
He has also worked as an assistant coach at Manchester United and Real Madrid, giving him extensive experience at both international and elite club levels.
The GFA said his experience, together with his familiarity with the current Black Stars squad, were among the factors considered in the decision to retain him.
Queiroz’s immediate task will be to prepare the Black Stars for the upcoming international window and lay the foundation for Ghana’s 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
The GFA, however, has yet to disclose the duration of the new contract, saying details of the agreement will be announced in due course.
The decision provides the Black Stars with some coaching stability as Ghana begins a new cycle following its World Cup campaign.
