Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has urged the newly elected national executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to put the party’s internal contest behind them and focus on rebuilding the party ahead of the 2028 general election.
Congratulating the new leadership following the party’s national executive elections in Kumasi, Mr Afenyo-Markin said the outcome should mark the beginning of a new phase of service, unity and organisational renewal rather than the end of a political contest.
“To our newly elected officers: congratulations. But remember, you have won a duty, not a trophy,” he said in a Facebook post on Sunday, October 4.
He also appealed to contestants who were unsuccessful in the elections to remain engaged with the party and support the new leadership.
“To those who did not prevail: the Party still needs you,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin cautioned members against allowing the divisions generated by the internal elections to undermine the party’s broader objectives.
“Nobody should leave Kumasi to work against the NPP. The internal contest is over. The greater work begins,” he said.
The call comes as the NPP begins a new phase following its national executive elections, with the new leadership expected to strengthen the party’s structures and prepare it for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Former General Secretary John Boadu was elected National Chairman, while Justin Frimpong Kodua retained the position of General Secretary.
Titus Glover was elected National Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu became National Youth Organiser and former MP Mavis Hawa Koomson was elected National Women’s Organiser.
Kojo Fosu Boadu, popularly known as Kojo Bamba, was elected First Vice Chairman, while Henry Nana Boakye and Nana Akomea were elected Second and Third Vice Chairmen respectively.
Mr Afenyo-Markin said the party must draw lessons from its defeat in the 2024 general election and use the new leadership transition to restore unity and rebuild public confidence.
“We fell together, and we have learned together. Now we must rise together with renewed hope, humility, discipline and hard work,” he said.
His message places renewed emphasis on reconciliation within the party, with the new executives expected to bring together competing factions and channel their collective efforts towards the NPP’s preparations for 2028.
