Ghana continues to strengthen its academic links with Europe, with an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 Ghanaian students currently enrolled in higher education institutions across the continent, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed.
The students are pursuing programmes in several disciplines, including engineering, green technologies, medicine, public policy and social sciences, reflecting the growing interest among Ghanaian youth in international education opportunities.
Germany and France are among the destinations attracting students in engineering and green technology fields, while others are studying in the United Kingdom, Italy, Hungary and Nordic countries.
Mr Iddrisu said the growing presence of Ghanaian students in European universities presented an opportunity for the country to benefit from international knowledge, technical expertise and research capabilities.
According to him, their exposure to different academic systems also equips them with intercultural competencies and international networks that could support Ghana’s development.
He made the remarks on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at the maiden Study in Europe Fair organised by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Ghana in partnership with GIZ and the Ghanaian-European Centre for Jobs, Migration and Development at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The event was designed to connect prospective Ghanaian students with European universities and diplomatic representatives while providing information on opportunities for higher education across Europe.
Participants received guidance on academic programmes, admission requirements, visa procedures and available funding opportunities.
The fair also featured an Erasmus+ information desk, a CV clinic, a session on preparing competitive applications and networking opportunities for young people.
Mr Iddrisu described Europe as an important destination for Ghanaian students seeking quality education, research opportunities and international exposure.
He said the initiative further demonstrated the longstanding partnership between Ghana and European countries, built on shared values, intellectual exchange and mutual development.
