Chelsea returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion, securing a much-needed victory over Southampton to end their three-game losing streak and reclaim a spot in the Premier League’s top four.
A strong first-half display set the tone for the Blues at Stamford Bridge, with Christopher Nkunku opening the scoring in the 24th minute, heading in Tosin Adarabioyo’s flick from a corner. Nkunku then turned provider, setting up Pedro Neto for a composed finish past Aaron Ramsdale. Levi Colwill extended Chelsea’s lead just before halftime, rising highest to nod in Neto’s free-kick.
The second half saw Chelsea maintain control, and in the 78th minute, substitute Tyrique George teed up Marc Cucurella, who finished a swift counter-attack with a powerful shot.
While the result lifted Chelsea two points ahead of Manchester City and Newcastle, who have games in hand, concerns remain over star forward Cole Palmer. The team’s top scorer failed to find the net for the seventh consecutive match, missing several clear-cut chances.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca also showed faith in young goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen despite his recent struggles, and the 22-year-old put in a steady performance, making a crucial save early on to deny Paul Onuachu.
The match also saw the introduction of academy prospects Mathis Amougou and Shumaira Mheuka, who made their Premier League debuts in the closing stages.
Despite protests from a section of fans against the club’s ownership before kickoff, Chelsea’s commanding performance provided a boost as they continue their push for a top-four finish.
