The high-stakes nature of top-flight football has claimed another casualty as Asante Kotoko have parted ways with head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, bringing his second stint with the Porcupine Warriors to an abrupt end.
In a statement released Monday afternoon, the club cited a mutual agreement as the basis for the decision, following what it described as “constructive discussions” between both parties.
“This decision was reached following constructive discussions between both parties, with a shared understanding that it is in the best interest of the club at this time,” the club said.
The departure comes after a painful 2-0 loss to Nations FC—Kotoko’s second straight defeat in the league, following a 3-0 thrashing by Accra Lions. Once viewed as strong title contenders, the Kumasi-based giants have seen their title hopes unravel rapidly in the second half of the season.
Kotoko’s recent form has been worrying: just two wins in their last nine games, with five draws and two demoralizing losses. The team now sits fourth in the league on 47 points, six points behind league leaders Bibiani Gold Stars, with only six games left in the season.
Despite the slide, the club still has a shot at silverware, having secured a spot in the semi-finals of the MTN FA Cup. However, the decision to part ways with Ogum suggests that club executives felt a leadership shake-up was needed to arrest the slump and salvage what remains of their campaign.
Dr. Ogum’s exit underlines the growing trend of performance-driven managerial changes in the Ghana Premier League, where expectations from fans and management often leave little room for rebuilding or inconsistency.
His tenure, marked by tactical flexibility and a strong start, ultimately fell short of the consistency required to sustain a title push in a tightly contested season.
As Kotoko prepares to navigate the final stretch without their head coach, questions remain about who will take the reins—and whether a late-season revival is still possible.
