In a bold step to promote regional solidarity and youth empowerment, President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a new scholarship initiative that will see 1,000 students from across the ECOWAS sub-region receive government-sponsored tertiary education in Ghana.
The announcement was made during the official launch of the 50th Anniversary celebrations of ECOWAS in Accra on Tuesday, April 4, 2025.
Positioning the programme as a strategic effort to foster deeper integration, President Mahama highlighted education as a powerful tool to bridge socio-cultural divides and build lasting partnerships among the youth of West Africa.
“This is more than a scholarship; it is a bridge to a united future,” Mahama said. “Through education, we can build a sub-region where young people grow up seeing each other not as foreigners, but as partners.”
He urged West African nations to continue leveraging shared history, culture, and aspirations to position ECOWAS as a beacon of cooperation and peaceful coexistence on the continent.
The 1,000-scholarship package is expected to cover a wide range of academic disciplines in Ghanaian universities, strengthening inter-country ties and enhancing the role of youth in driving regional progress.
