Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan is opening up about some of the “what-ifs” of his football career — and one of them includes a dream that never came true: playing for Manchester United.
Speaking in a recent interview on Accra-based TV3, the iconic Ghanaian striker revealed that although he enjoyed a successful football journey across Europe and Asia, he had always hoped to wear the red jersey of Old Trafford.
“I really wanted to play for Manchester United,” Gyan shared, reflecting on the peak years of his career. “It’s something I wished could have happened before I retired.”
During his time in the English Premier League, Gyan made waves at Sunderland, becoming a fan favorite with his flair, passion, and goal-scoring instincts. But after just one season, he made a high-profile move to Asia, a decision driven by a lucrative offer that was hard to turn down.
Looking beyond the pitch, the former Ghanaian skipper also gave fans a rare glimpse into the lighter side of football life. When asked about the funniest teammate he ever played with, Gyan didn’t hesitate to name Kwadwo Asamoah.
“People think he’s quiet because of how he presents himself publicly,” Gyan said with a laugh. “But trust me, Kwadwo is one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met.”
Gyan’s candid revelations offer a nostalgic look at a career that has spanned continents, captivated millions, and still leaves fans wondering what might have been if his path had led him to Old Trafford.
