A leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Wenchi, Mr. Richard Kwadwo Adu, has commended Kennedy Ohene Agyapong for what he described as an extraordinary show of loyalty to the party, following the latter’s decision to stand surety for embattled party elder, Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi.
Mr. Agyapong, a former Assin Central Member of Parliament, voluntarily offered himself as one of the sureties for Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi, who has been charged in connection with the failed Sky Train project that cost the state $2 million but never materialized.
The Accra High Court has granted the former Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) a bail of GH₵10 million, with two sureties to be justified. He has pleaded not guilty to all four charges, including willfully causing financial loss to the state.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Wenchi, Mr. Adu — who is also an aspiring NPP Constituency Chairman — said Mr. Agyapong’s action was symbolic of the “undefiled and biblical kind of love” the party desperately needs to restore its unity and reposition itself for a return to power in 2028.
“Mr. Agyapong has proven that he is a selfless patriot. His decision to stand by Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi in these trying times is unmatched in our political history,” he said.
Mr. Adu urged the party’s national leadership and rank-and-file to rally around Prof. Ameyaw-Ekumfi, whom he described as a founding pillar of the NPP in the former Brong-Ahafo Region.
He added that the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition, which underpins the NPP’s political ideology, has endured Ghana’s post-independence political turbulence largely because of the deep loyalty and solidarity among its faithful.
“Now more than ever, we need to show that we don’t abandon our own,” Mr. Adu stressed.
