Liverpool’s Premier League victory parade turned tragic on Monday when a vehicle plowed into a crowd on Water Street, leaving four people in critical condition and dozens more injured. The incident unfolded amidst a jubilant gathering of an estimated one million fans celebrating the club’s first title since the pandemic.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, treating 27 people at hospitals and attending to 20 others with minor injuries on site. Among the victims were children, highlighting the severity of the crash during what was meant to be a joyous occasion.
Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram expressed hope for the recovery of those critically hurt, while Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the event, emphasizing that celebrations must remain safe spaces for all, especially children.
Authorities have arrested a 53-year-old local man in connection with the crash, describing the incident as isolated and unrelated to terrorism. Investigations continue into how the vehicle accessed the pedestrianized parade route, with police appealing to the public for any video evidence and urging restraint from speculation.
