In a bid to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education in the Ablekuma West district, Rev. Kweku Addo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, has announced a collaboration with Alpha Beta School in Dansoman.
The initiative seeks to address low student performance in science and technology subjects, which the MP described as “not encouraging.”
Rev. Addo made the announcement during the STEAM Fair exhibition organized by Alpha Beta School. The fair highlighted various projects in science, environmental conservation, technology, engineering, and the arts, all part of the school’s ongoing STEM35 Legacy Project.
Commending the school’s efforts in STEAM education, the MP emphasized that community collaboration was key.
“If an institution like Alpha Beta can independently support sixty students, then the broader community should be able to build on that rather than reinventing the wheel,” he stated.
Alpha Beta School has taken proactive steps to bridge the educational gap, offering free practical lessons to students from public schools that lack STEAM facilities. The institution is equipped with resources for coding, robotics, renewable energy, and engineering, benefiting both its students and the wider community.
Dr. Naomi Adjepong, the Director of Alpha Beta School, provided insights into the STEAM35 Legacy Project, a five-year initiative launched in 2023 aimed at creating a STEM Centre of Excellence to impact 3,500 young learners in Dansoman.
So far, 60 students from Alpha Beta and public schools have directly benefited from the program, with an additional 100 girls participating in the STEM Champions Programme.
Dr. Adjepong reiterated Alpha Beta’s commitment to promoting innovative education but called for more support to expand its facilities.
The MP’s partnership with the school signals a renewed focus on STEAM education in Ablekuma West, with hopes of boosting student performance and preparing young people for future careers in science and technology.
