Residents of Aboabogya in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality have expressed optimism following the commencement of construction work on a new 24-Hour Economy model market and commercial centre, a government initiative aimed at expanding round-the-clock trading activities.
The sod-cutting ceremony drew chiefs, traders, residents, and municipal officials, who described the project as a major step toward modernising commerce and improving economic opportunities in the area.
Traders say the planned facility is expected to provide a more structured trading environment, ease congestion in informal markets, and create jobs, particularly for young people, while improving access to goods and services.
The project forms part of the government’s broader 24-Hour Economy policy, designed to promote continuous business activity beyond traditional daytime hours and enhance productivity through improved infrastructure and security.
Once completed, the market is expected to support both day and night trading, with improved lighting and organised layouts intended to ensure safer and more efficient commercial operations.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive, Ms. Patricia Pearl Ankrah, said the initiative would significantly strengthen local economic activity and attract investment to the municipality.
She added that the project would also address long-standing challenges faced by traders operating in overcrowded and unplanned market spaces, while improving livelihoods within the community.
Ms. Ankrah praised the Chief of Aboabogya, Nana Wiafe Akenten Amoah II, for releasing five acres of land for the project without requesting compensation, describing the gesture as a strong example of community leadership.
The traditional authorities also performed customary rites at the site, seeking blessings for the successful execution of the project and urging residents to support its completion.
Eco-Engineers and Planners, the contractors for the project, have been tasked to complete the facility within 24 months. Project Manager Mr. Frank Antwi assured that work would be executed according to specifications and delivered on schedule.
